Family Access Program
Affordable orthodontic treatment for children and adults who do not qualify for Medi-Cal orthodontic coverage. Medi-Cal orthodontic benefits only extend through age 21, and even then, coverage is limited to the most severe cases.
Affordable Braces for Families Who Don't Qualify for Medi-Cal
At Life Orthodontics, we believe every patient deserves the opportunity to achieve a healthy, beautiful smile. Medi-Cal orthodontic benefits are only available through age 21, and even for patients under 21, coverage is reserved for the most severe cases that meet strict medical necessity requirements.
In reality, most patients evaluated for Medi-Cal orthodontic coverage do not qualify. This includes children and teens whose cases do not meet Medi-Cal's medical necessity guidelines, as well as adults over 21, who are not eligible for Medi-Cal orthodontic benefits at all regardless of need. That is why we created our Family Access Program, to provide high-quality orthodontic treatment at a significantly reduced fee for patients of any age who do not qualify.
If we believe a patient under 21 has a reasonable chance of qualifying for Medi-Cal orthodontic coverage, we will say so and recommend visiting a participating Medi-Cal orthodontic provider first. Our Family Access Program is intended for those who do not qualify, because we believe every patient deserves access to orthodontic care.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Life Orthodontics accept Medi-Cal?
We do not bill Medi-Cal directly for orthodontic treatment. If we believe a patient under 21 has a good chance of qualifying for Medi-Cal orthodontic coverage, we will recommend visiting a participating Medi-Cal orthodontic provider before considering our Family Access Program.
Do most patients actually qualify for Medi-Cal orthodontic coverage?
No. Most patients evaluated for Medi-Cal orthodontic benefits do not qualify. Medi-Cal orthodontic coverage is limited to the most severe cases that meet strict medical necessity criteria, and only extends through age 21. The majority of children, teens, and all adults over 21 do not qualify, even when orthodontic treatment would clearly be beneficial.
Is this program only for children, or can adults use it too?
The Family Access Program is available to both children and adults. Since Medi-Cal orthodontic benefits stop at age 21 regardless of need, adults are never eligible for Medi-Cal orthodontic coverage and are always welcome in this program.
How do I know if my child qualifies for Medi-Cal orthodontic coverage?
During your complimentary consultation, we will evaluate your bite and orthodontic needs. If we believe a patient under 21 meets Medi-Cal's medical necessity guidelines, we will let you know and recommend pursuing those benefits first.
What does the Family Access program include?
Comprehensive treatment with traditional metal braces, regular adjustment appointments for up to 24 months, one set of retainers, and your initial consultation and orthodontic records.
What is not included in the Family Access Program?
The Family Access Program is designed to keep treatment affordable, which means a few things are not included in the flat fee. Treatment extending beyond 24 months is subject to an additional fee per appointment. The first three broken brackets are repaired at no charge, and any broken brackets beyond that are subject to a small additional fee. Auxiliary appliances such as expanders are not included and are subject to an additional fee. Our exclusive Smile for Life Guarantee, including Retainer Insurance and Life Smile Insurance, is not included in this program but can be purchased separately if you would like that added protection.
What type of braces are included?
This program includes only traditional metal twin braces, one of the most effective and reliable orthodontic treatment options available.
Can I upgrade to clear braces, clear aligners or InSmile Braces?
Yes. If you are interested in other treatment options, we would be happy to discuss them during your consultation. Premium treatment options are available at our standard treatment fees.
How long is treatment covered under this program?
The program includes up to 24 months of active orthodontic treatment, which covers the vast majority of comprehensive cases. Treatment extending beyond 24 months is subject to an additional fee per appointment.
